ISA Specialist Provision of the Year Award

Every young person deserves to feel hopeful about their future. At Reddish Hall School, we work with children and young people who often arrive having faced significant barriers to learning, confidence, wellbeing and engagement. Many have experienced disrupted educational journeys, struggled to find success within previous settings or find it difficult to recognise their own strengths and potential. Yet, behind every challenge is a young person with talents, interests, aspirations and the capacity to achieve far more than they may believe possible. Our role is to help them see that too. We believe that specialist provision should be ambitious, aspirational and deeply personalised. It should not simply focus on overcoming difficulties but on helping young people discover who they are, what they can achieve and the opportunities available to them.
At Reddish Hall School, we believe specialist provision should do more than meet need; it should transform lives. Our pupils arrive with complex SEMH needs, communication difficulties and additional SEND, often having experienced disrupted educational journeys, poor self-esteem and significant barriers to learning. Our vision is to create an environment where every child is understood as an individual, where personalised support is embedded across all aspects of school life and where every young person is prepared for a successful and meaningful future.
Our approach begins with understanding the whole child. Educational, clinical and therapeutic teams work collaboratively to identify each pupil’s strengths, interests, aspirations and barriers to learning. Provision is not driven by diagnosis but by understanding what each child needs to thrive. A key strength of our model is the integration of therapeutic practice throughout school life. Clinical teams work alongside education staff to support emotional regulation, engagement and wellbeing. Progress is recognised in many forms including attendance, confidence, communication, resilience, independence, relationships and readiness for adulthood. We have developed a progressive Preparation for Adulthood pathway from Year 7 to Year 11.
Careers education begins with self-awareness and understanding personal strengths before progressing towards labour market awareness, employability skills, work experience and destination planning. Preparation for adulthood extends far beyond careers. Pupils develop practical skills in budgeting, banking, meal preparation, travel safety, self-care, organisation and community participation. Travel training follows a staged model that supports pupils to progress towards greater independence and confidence. Employer engagement is another significant strength. Through partnerships with employers and providers, pupils access meaningful work experience, employer encounters, college visits and apprenticeship information. Feedback consistently highlights pupils’ professionalism, determination and willingness to learn.
Student voice sits at the heart of provision. Pupils influence careers planning, work experience opportunities, transition pathways and wider school development. Families are active partners, ensuring aspirations and support plans remain genuinely personalised. Arts and cultural enrichment further strengthen our provision. Through Artsmark, creative opportunities are embedded across the curriculum, supporting confidence, self-expression, communication and aspiration. Partnerships with cultural organisations broaden horizons and expose pupils to opportunities they may never otherwise experience. Staff are central to success. Continuous professional development, therapeutic consultation and shared responsibility ensure every member of staff plays an active role in supporting each child’s growth and development. The impact can be seen in young people who progress into positive destinations, develop independence, improve emotional wellbeing and begin to see themselves as successful learners and valued members of their communities.
The true measure of specialist provision is not what happens within school walls, but the life a young person is able to build beyond them. At Reddish Hall, personalised learning, therapeutic practice, life skills, careers education and family partnership come together to create meaningful and lasting change. Our pupils leave with qualifications, skills and ambitions, but most importantly they leave with confidence, independence and belief in their own potential. By recognising and celebrating every individual’s strengths, achievements and aspirations, we empower young people with complex needs to thrive, participate in their communities and look to the future with optimism. This is the difference specialist provision can make, and it is the difference we strive to make every day.
