Curriculum Intent

To provide all students access to the core aims of the National Curriculum for History through adapted, high-impact weekly lessons that prioritise depth depth, engagement, and understanding.

To develop transferable historical skills — chronology, cause and consequence, and communication — through carefully structured topics.

To help students make sense of change, identity, and diversity, using history to build empathy, perspective, and cultural understanding.

To foster curiosity, critical thinking, and respectful discussion, supporting progress across subjects and preparation for KS4 History and adult life.
Curriculum Progression

Historical Knowledge & Understanding – develops from recognising simple past events to explaining complex developments and contexts across time.

Change and Continuity – moves from noticing differences between periods to analysing the pace, pattern, and impact of change.

Cause and Consequence – progresses from identifying single causes or effects to evaluating multiple, interlinked factors and their significance.

Significance and Sources – builds from describing what sources show to assessing their reliability, bias, and importance in shaping historical understanding.

Communication & Enquiry – extends from short oral or written responses to structured arguments and independent enquiries supported by evidence and historical language.
LOTC / Cultural Capital

Students experience curriculum-linked visits that bring history to life and strengthen understanding through real-world exploration.

Trips — including Conwy Castle, Ordsall Hall, the People’s History Museum, and the Imperial War Museum — provide direct engagement with artefacts, architecture, and historical settings.

Visits are planned to extend cultural capital and reduce barriers to experience, developing empathy, curiosity, and a sense of place in British and global history.

Pre-visit briefings and post-visit reflection tasks ensure safe, purposeful learning, embedding knowledge and personal growth beyond the classroom.
