Returning to school after Christmas

Dear Parents & Carers,

On behalf of all at Reddish Hall School, we would like to wish you a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.  2021 has been extremely challenging for everyone, and our pupils have managed the changes thrown at them superbly well.  We are very proud of them all.  Thank you for all the support you have given your child and the school in the last twelve months; we know it has been a difficult time for everyone.

Our children return to school on Thursday 6th January 2022.  Given the current rise in Covid-19 cases, there may be further restrictions brought in by the government before then.  However, as an SEN provision, we expect to be open as usual for our pupils.  Confirmation or this or any changes will be on our website by 2.30pm on Wednesday 5th January.

As most of our children travel to school on shared transport, they will have come into contact with other pupils before a lateral flow test in school could be carried out.  We are unable to stagger start times due to transport to enable us to set up testing on site effectively.  Therefore, we are asking parents/carers to lateral flow test their child at home on Wednesday evenings and Sunday evenings, starting with Wednesday 5 January.

One of the biggest challenges we face will be maintaining staff numbers so our classes can run as normal.  Our children rely on the consistency of staff, and while we will use agency when required, this isn’t always available and our children can struggle with new people.  You can help keep us open by doing the following:

  • Lateral flow test your child the evening of Wednesday 5 January.  If they are positive, book a PCR test – they must self-isolate unless they get a negative PCR test result
  • Do not send your child in (or put them on transport) if they have any symptoms of a cold.  The new variant is presenting with cold-like symptoms (runny nose, tickly cough, sore throat, headache, fatigue) and book a PCR test.  If the PCR test is negative, they may come into school
  • Do not send your child into school or put them on transport if they have other Covid symptoms: high temperature, loss of taste or smell, persistent cough.  Book a PCR test as above
  • Test your child every Sunday and Wednesday evening – this helps pick up asymptomatic cases and stops the spread
  • If your child has been in contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19, then daily lateral flow tests should be carried out

You can order lateral flow testing kits online or pick them up from your nearest pharmacy.

If your child presents with any symptoms as mentioned above whilst at school, we will contact you and ask you to collect them, or arrange someone to pick them up.  We are unable to transport them, and the taxi company will refuse to collect them from school in order to protect its drivers.  We appreciate this is inconvenient, but in order to keep classes open, we need to minimize any potential spread of the virus.  You child will be supervised from a distance in the medical room or a free area while they wait for you.

Have a fantastic Christmas and a safe and happy New Year from everyone at Reddish Hall.

Kind regards,

Sarah Makin
