COVID November 2021 – Letter to parents

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had several positive cases of COVID-19 during the last week; thankfully, cases appear to be asymptomatic or very mild.  All the cases have been staff and pupils based in the Denstone building, so years 5 – 9 at the Denstone Road site at the time of writing.

Pupils in years 5 – 9 based at Denstone Road do not need to self-isolate unless they develop symptoms.

If they develop symptoms, they should stay off school and be booked for a PCR test as soon as possible.  If the PCR test comes back negative, they are able to come back into school.  If they do not do the test, they should isolate for ten days.  Please keep in mind that asymptomic cases do occur, and someone can have the virus but not show symptoms.

Pupils in years 5 – 9 at Denstone are classed as close contacts, and children in years 7 – 9 should take a lateral flow test daily. We understand that for some children this can be difficult due to their sensory needs.  However, they do not need to swab the throat, and the test is still valid if both nostrils are swabbed for ten seconds.

Other children in year 7 and above on all sites should be encouraged to test using LFT devices twice a week.  There is a crossover with all sites with local authority shared transport which is outside of school’s control, but it does mean that the virus could be spread pupil to pupil even if they are not on the same site or based in the same building, but see each other on transport.

It is still possible to contract the virus even if staff are ‘double jabbed’.   If staff test positive, they have to self-isolate for the ten day period, which does result in staffing changes in school.

To help prevent the spread and staff having to be off school, which impacts on your child, we do ask you to test your child using LFT as above and keep them off school if they have any symptoms of Covid-19.  This can help maintain consistency in school for your child.

If you have any further questions or need more LFT kits, please contact us by phoning school or emailing your usual school contact.

Kind regards,

Sarah Makin
